About this workshop

In this two-day oil painting masterclass with 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize winner Andrea Huelin, you will work from a supplied photograph to practice portrait painting with an emphasis on tonal values.  Andrea will demonstrate how to first simplify your image into broad tonal regions, building detail as the painting progresses.  Students will have the opportunity to learn colour mixing 'recipes' for portraits, and how to make the best use of your big brushes to create a ‘painterly’ style of portrait.   Andrea will guide you from beginning to end on how to create your portrait. On the first day, you will learn a process of pre-mixing your colours and using layers of paint to produce a painting study from a photograph that Andrea will supply, and on the second day, you will practise this process with your own reference material. Students will learn about: * Preparing your subject for life painting, or choosing an appropriate photograph * Achieving a likeness in your portrait
 * Preparing and managing your chosen palette of colours
 * The importance of tonal values in portraits
Is this course right for me? This workshop will suit beginners to portraits and experienced artists who want to shake up their oil painting skills and learn new approaches to portraiture. Photo References: Andrea will supply a photograph to work from on the first day. Please bring a reference photograph of your own for day 2. Make sure the photograph is clear and has good contrast so that you can work with strong darks and lights to bring out the features of your subject.
