Learn Andrea's techniques for achieving an effective and life-like portrait in this workshop held over two consecutive Saturdays (August 2 and 9, 10am to 4pm). You'll learn about building a portrait using tonal values, and how to keep your oil paint clean and bright on the canvas.

About The Event
In this two-day oil painting masterclass with 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize winner Andrea Huelin, you will work from a supplied photograph to practise portrait painting with an emphasis on tonal values. Andrea will demonstrate how to first simplify your image into broad tonal regions, building detail as the painting progresses. You will learn how to mix your colour palette and keep it under control so that your painting has liveliness and clarity.
Students will have the opportunity to learn colour mixing 'recipes' for portraits, and how to make the best use of your big brushes to create a ‘painterly’ style of portrait.
Note for acrylic painters: This workshop is geared towards oils. However, while Andrea works in oils and is not that experienced with acrylics, the principles for painting in acrylics are the same. If you are an acrylic painter and keen to do this workshop, Andrea will do her best to provide the…

Your ticket includes tea and coffee, but painting materials are not supplied. Andrea will provide you with a list of materials to bring. You may also opt to use Andrea's materials for an extra cost of $50 per person.
