Still life painting in oils

About this workshop

The beauty of still life painting is that you always have subject material to choose from! You don't have to worry about convincing a friend to sit for you, or wait for a perfect landscape day. Some of the best still life paintings are simple observations of everyday objects, and with a bit of tuition from me, you will be able to approach just about any subject matter with confidence for your artwork. No matter what your experience, I will guide you through my process of composition, colour mixing and applying tonal values to create a lively and vibrant painting. The workshop is designed as a fun day of painting and learning about colour mixing with oils, keeping your paint looking fresh and clean on your canvas, and working with big brushes. In the workshop, you will produce one or two painting studies from reference material that Andrea will supply, so that you have the techniques to apply to your own still life arrangements when you return to your studio. What to expect: A small class of 8 or fewer people so that you receive good instruction and feedback from Andrea, and so that you have room to set up your gear without feeling crowded. What to bring: An Apron or daggy clothes, a water bottle and your lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits are supplied. If you are bringing your own oil painting materials, here is a brief list of what you will need. Andrea will supply you with a more detailed list after booking. Oil paint colours – White, a cool and a warm of each primary colour, red and yellow ochre and a dark grey or black. Brushes – One good quality flat brush, about 1.5 cms across the bristles (around a size 8 or 10), one smaller flat brush and one filbert. Oil painting medium – Odourless or low odour lean medium (at least 100ml). Painting surfaces – Two canvases or panels around A3 size ODOURLESS solvent for clean up and diluting paints Other things – A big palette, disposable gloves, apron, tissues
