ABOUT ME

I am a visual artist based in Melbourne, with strong links to family in Cairns and Perth, Australia. I work out of a converted warehouse studio in Footscray, and I welcome visitors by appointment, so please get in touch if you would like to see my paintings or discuss a project, residency or teaching opportunity. ABOUT MY WORK

My paintings are an expression of my interest in colour and form, and my attempts to understand and re-present the world around me. In a previous career I was a journalist and ABC program maker, and I still consider myself a collector and conveyer of stories. View my CV here.

The only thing more fun than finding new art materials is finding cheap new art materials. I had a ball shopping in Osaka, and making some little paintings with new water-based paint palettes. Considering it was the middle of winter, I also found no end of colour inspiration in Japan. My first workshops for the year are now listed on my website -- have a look via the link in my bio to get in on the painterly action.

Thank you Japan! We had a fabulous time in this magical place. We watched the snow fall in huge fluffy flakes from the comfort of our fireplace, we kept mostly upright on the slopes, ate our body weight in noodles, marvelled at all of the nifty things, and chuckled at the English labelling that was lost in translation. Now it's back to the studio for me, and an exciting year of teaching, painting, and exhibiting. For this 10th anniversary bottle, I was given the honour (and challenge) of revisiting each of the original artworks that have graced the Australian Christmas Gin bottles, and incorporating an element of each into the painting. If you've been thinking about treating yourself to a day of painting and learning with me, now's your chance! There are spaces in my oil painting workshops this Sunday the 22nd of June and next Sunday the 29th at the Cotton Mills in Footscray. (You don't have to sign up for both -- they are separate workshops.)

I have designed these classes as a way to introduce you to my style of painting -- being brave (even if we are not feeling it!) by using big brushes to build our paintings with tonal values, and manage our colours carefully so that we achieve paintings that have clarity and sparkle, but seem effortless.

I will give you a photograph as a reference to work from, and guide you through a step-by-step process of creating your own painting study in oils to take home after the workshop (bear in mind that it will be wet, so bring an old towel for the back seat of your car, or you can leave it here and pick it up later if you're catching public transport). I often meet proficient painters in my workshops who say that they can't do portraits, and I always say that if they can paint or draw other things, there's no reason that they can't do portraits. My theory is that people are so familiar with how a face should look, that they stop working on their portrait as soon as it starts to look a big freaky -- the eyes are just dark areas of tone, or there are no lips yet. I tell them to keep going because all portraits look weird at stages during the process. So, want to join in to one of my workshops and enjoy making some freaky portraits (until they start to look good, that is)? Details are on my website, www.andreahuelin.com

The book was written beautifully by @seidel_julie, Christine Larsen, Andrew Peachey and Jo-Anne Hine.
In what I’m calling my own little book tour (ahem 😎), I have a couple of workshops planned for art teachers coming up, which I’m looking forward to (because I always learn from them too!). The paintings are very big, and some of the objects in the parts of the images are sectioned or contained by shelves or cabinets, but I wanted to see if I could create a visual flow despite this, and to keep things ‘painterly’. My exhibition ‘Seeking a silk purse’ opened at Michael Reid Gallery in Sydney last night, with lots of lovely Sydney-based friends in attendance. Thanks so much for coming out!

The exhibition title refers to the painting challenge I set myself: to make large scale works with visual flow and colour harmony, despite the subject matter being busy with disparate objects. That is, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear (although I admit that my love of unexpected pattern and colour relationships means that I often find such semi-curated clutter very appealing, especially when things are organised into categories).

To keep a light touch across such big surfaces, I allowed some transparent underpainting areas to remain visible, while bringing clarity and solidity to certain areas with opaque paint. This made for a different and fun process that took place over weeks instead of days as I made new decisions, adding and subtracting.

Of course, the subject matter does play an important part, too. I am drawn to objects that evoke a smile from a nostalgic feeling, but there is also a small anxiety that these things are no longer in use or appreciated much. So I find it quite charming and a tiny bit sad that they are dressed up in their cabinets in vintage shops and markets to look appealing, like ageing pets at the pound. Throughout this beautifully realised body of work, Huelin conjures interior scenes and tablescapes that heave with wonderfully eclectic objects and coloured-glass vessels that glisten like jewels right to the edge of her expanded canvas.

The six stunning new works comprising the second instalment of ANDREA HUELIN’s ‘Opening Night’ series are now travelling from the artist’s studio in Naarm/Melbourne – where they are pictured here – and can be previewed and acquired by request.

The 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize-winner recently relocated her art practice from the tropical climes of Cairns to the Victorian capital and this change in scenery is fabulously evident in the moodier, noirish ambience of her latest still-life paintings.

“I really enjoyed playing with darker tones and electric light, even candlelight, rather than the bright sunlight of Cairns,” says Huelin, whose gorgeous floral arrangements echo this shift in tone, moving away from the spiky tangle of tropical plantings that featured in her previous work.

Gleaned from inner-city op-shops and her own personal collection, the artist’s eclectic still-life subjects appear moody, jewel-like, redolent of history and ensconced in nighttime spaces more cloistered and atmospheric than those seen in her Cairns-based work.

Delightful clusters of coloured crystal, Murano glass, vintage curios and an abundance of blooms are staged like little choruses and spotlit by vintage table lamps against thick velvet drapery in caramel, burgundy or plum.

We look forward to welcoming this second release of new work by Andrea Huelin, who is among the stars of our flagship Eora/Sydney gallery’s stable of represented artists and is now showing in the Southern Highlands for the first time.

I enjoyed having the foreground emerge from the background with subtle adjustments of tone and colour. At times it called for a fair bit of restraint, because it’s hard not to ‘describe’ things more fully, especially when they start to take shape. It’s fun to allow the brain to fill in the gaps - to hope it does, anyway. I’m beyond sad that my new friend Cal has died. We shared such an incredible, joyous experience this year with my Archibald painting of her in her ‘clown jewels’. She was so generous with her time, humour and friendship. I can only imagine how devastated her family must be. I have lots of stories that illustrate how well loved she was, but one lady on the street summed it up nicely when she stopped Cal as we were walking past, touched her arm lightly and said with adoring eyes, ‘You are a TREASURE!’. #calwilson

The latest exhibition from ANDREA HUELIN and her first since winning the Packing Room Prize at the Archibald, ‘Forage’ continues this week at Michael Reid Sydney and will be celebrated this Thursday evening with an opening reception.

“For this series, I focused on the foliage and the natural elements like coconuts and ginger instead of the glass and ceramic vessels,” says the artist. “It’s the first time I have included backgrounds in the still-life paintings, and I’m happy with the way the forms in those patterns sometimes echo the elements in the foreground, and sometimes they are contrasting.”

Opening this week at Michael Reid Sydney, ‘Forage’ is the first new series of paintings by ANDREA HUELIN since the artist was awarded the 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize.

This career highlight placed Huelin’s work squarely within mainstream collecting conversations and has since seen the Cairns-based painter amass significant patronage.

Now, with ‘Forage,’ the artist has delivered a love letter to her home of 28 years, beautifully capturing the character of her North Queensland garden with bright compositions set against vintage wallpaper designs dating from her childhood.

To coincide with the opening of ‘Forage’, Huelin will present a small selection of works from the series as part of Michael Reid Sydney + Berlin's exhibition at Sydney Contemporary.

Opening this week at Michael Reid Sydney, ‘Forage’ is the first new series of paintings by ANDREA HUELIN since the artist was awarded the 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize.

This career highlight placed Huelin’s work squarely within mainstream collecting conversations and has since seen the Cairns-based painter amass significant patronage.

Now, with ‘Forage,’ the artist has delivered a love letter to her home of 28 years, beautifully capturing the character of her North Queensland garden with bright compositions set against vintage wallpaper designs dating from her childhood.

To coincide with the opening of ‘Forage’, Huelin will present a small selection of works from the series as part of Michael Reid Sydney + Berlin's exhibition at Sydney Contemporary.

For this latest series of paintings, I set myself the challenge of painting in more layers than normal, to create richness and texture on the surface of the painting panels. It’s also the first time I have really focused on foliage and flowers instead of vessels, and the new backgrounds created another layer of complexity! For me, art making is most fun when I am learning, and getting that delicious feeling of discovery when something interesting happens. Even if it’s only the use of a new medium or paintbrush. Oh Wow. I just keep getting surprised and delighted by this Archibald adventure. The Sofitel Wentworth Sydney has made their lobby floral arrangement about my painting of Cal! I have been here for a couple of nights for Gallery events, and when I came downstairs this morning to reluctantly check out, I saw the flowers had been changed over. I looked at them for a while and thought, those colours look familiar…. Hang on!? The hotel is also doing a high tea that is themed around the painting. I love love love that florists and chefs are getting a chance to be creative with the painting (which, after all, is my take on Cal and her creativity). It’s silly headdresses all the way down!! Thank you @sofitelsydney and @artgalleryofnsw and Penny from @flowersonnortonst
